SEGA Ages Coming West, Bringing Sonic, Alex Kidd and More To Switch

Developed by M2, the Japanese developer known for high-quality ports of classic games such as the popular SEGA 3D Classics series on the 3DS, SEGA Ages aims to bring prominent titles from SEGA's legacy catalog to fans around the world. You might recognize AtGames as the makers of last year's Sega Genesis Flashback HD, which was panned in reviews. Where titles such as Outlast II, Saints Row IV and South Park: The Stick of Truth have been released with M ratings in North America, these same titles were banned from release within Australia for their content or heavily edited to make them acceptable under the rating board's guidelines; sometimes to hilarious results, as can be seen in how The Stick of Truth was censored for Australian release with crying koalas. We suggest just replacing the Sonic 3 music with Smash Mouth instead.

More titles are planned from the annals of Sega's vast gaming library, so with this unique virtual console headed to Switch in the coming months Switch is fast becoming the place to enjoy your favourite retro classics.

At the end of the panel, Shimomura said, "I believe that the Nintendo Switch hardware characteristics mesh very well with classic games". During the event, Sega teased that it is planning to release more than 15 games under the Sega Ages banner. However, a feature in an official Nintendo magazine in Spain has purportedly revealed several crucial details about the Pokemon game on the hybrid console.

Only Sonic the Hedgehog, Thunder Force IV and Phantasy Star were confirmed to start, but later in the day Alex Kidd and arcade title Gain Ground were confirmed as well. These will be released on the Switch eShop individually.

As somebody who's into both Sega and retro games, I've heard a lot about Sega Ages, but I've never had a chance to try out the series for myself. Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Phantasy Star initially released on the SEGA Master System in 1986 and 1987, respectively.
