An asteroid estimated to be at least 150 feet in diameter made an alarmingly close pass to Earth on Sunday morning just hours after it was first observed by astronomers. So much for the vaunted asteroid early detection program. 2018 GE3 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey approaching Earth on April 14th. Every ~ 2.5 years the area rock crosses the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars- although not always making close techniques to the worlds themselves.

That 10,000-ton meteorite shattered into thousands of small fragments that fell throughout the region, according to Time, injuring about 1,500 people and causing considerable damage.

SpaceWeather.com called 2018 GE3 a significant asteroid, being found less than a day before its closest approach to Earth, that might have caused regional damage had it hit earth or disintegrated in the atmosphere just before reaching the ground.

With little warning, a relatively large asteroid flew through the Earth-Moon system on April 15th only 192,200 km (0.5 LD) from our planet. "During my observations, he shone like a star of 13th magnitude" - he said GE3 2018 should amount to from 48 to 110 meters in width. An interactive 3D orbit of the asteroid is available from JPL: explore it here!
