Donald Trump announces strikes on the Syrian regime

She added: "I think that Parliament should have been recalled before the strike".

In attacks alongside United States and French allies on Saturday, four British Tornado jets fired Storm Shadow missiles at a Syrian military base suspected of holding chemical weapons components.

The UK has begun air strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites.

In a statement Mrs May said that the Syrian regime had demonstrated a "persistent pattern of behaviour" when it came to the use of chemical weapons, that "must be stopped".

Cyprus authorities made the warning on Thursday, the company said, following an announcement two days earlier from Europe's air traffic control agency that asked carriers flying over the eastern Mediterranean to exercise caution due to air strikes into Syria.

"There is a wider question on the future political solution for Syria and that is a matter that we will continue to pursue in diplomatic and political channels with our worldwide partners and allies", May said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities.

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt opposed calls from MPs including Mr Corbyn - who has called for a War Powers Act - to give Parliament greater powers over military interventions.

"It was right to take the action that we have done in the timing that we have done", she said. This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime.

"I have done so because I judge this action to be in Britain's national interest".

May is not obliged to win parliament's approval before ordering military action, but a non-binding constitutional convention to do so has been established since a 2003 vote on joining the USA -led invasion of Iraq.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement that Canada stands with its allies and that it supports the decision " to take action to degrade the Assad regime's ability to launch chemical weapons attacks against its own people".

Lawmakers backed action in Iraq in 2014, and again in Syria in 2015, strictly limiting strikes in both countries to targets of the Islamic State jihadist group.

He reiterated that Canada condemns the use of chemical weapons in Ghouta.
