Woolworths hit with technical outage, checkouts unable to process sales

A technical issue has forced Woolworths shops across Australia to close.

Trolleys abandoned at the Caneland Woolworths registers.

Signs have been put up at a number of Woolworths branches apologising for the problem, which has been described as a "system fault".

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store". Many have left full trolleys behind.

"It was really frustrating".

"Registers are offline so customers are standing in queues with baskets of food that they can't buy", she said.

There were reports some supermarkets had since come back online.

Tyson Whelan, a journalism student at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, said on Twitter a manager in East Doncaster, Victoria, told him "all the registers are out across the state".

"We can confirm that an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon. We apologise for the inconvenience this caused our customers".

INITIAL: MAYHEM has erupted at Woolworths stores across the Mackay region as a national technical outage shuts down stores.
