Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston's fifth-year option reportedly picked

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers have chose to pick up the fifth-year option on Winston's rookie contract.

Winston's salary for his fifth-year will be $20.922 million dollars. The contract is guaranteed only against injury.

There was no debate about Tampa's direction here. Should Winston have another poor season and the Buccaneers decide to clean house, he can be released provided he can pass a physical. While not a ideal specimen under center, Winston's 69 touchdowns to 44 picks fairly represent his work to date.

Winston is headed into the final season of his rookie deal, having progressed in fits and starts since the Bucs made him the No. 1 pick in the draft back in 2015.

Tampa Bay still could work out a long-term contract with Winston.

Winston's 2017 campaign was an injury-plagued, up-and-down operation, but he showed well down the stretch for a Bucs team that never lived up to the hype as the subject of HBO's Hard Knocks.

This is a clear indication that the Buccaneers are still in the evaluation process with Winston. "My focus has been with this organization, getting the guys back in here and focusing what we can do to become a better team this offseason".

Winston now has two more seasons before potentially hitting free agency, so he can take that time to prove what he can do in this league.
