Trump Promises Strike on Syria and Warns Russia Against Backing Assad

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis took a more measured tone, saying the USA and its military coalition partners were still studying intelligence on the attack. Bush addressed sailors aboard a Navy ship in May 2003 alongside a "Mission Accomplished" banner, just weeks before it became apparent that Iraqis had organized an insurgency that tied down USA forces for years.

A Kremlin spokesman warned the United States and its allies against any steps that could destabilise the situation in Syria. The Pentagon said it gave no explicit warning.

But his military advisers have warned that a scaled-up response risks drawing the United States into further conflict with Russian Federation and Iran, which support Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

Russia's Defense Ministry said that none of the missiles entered zones guarded by Russia's missile defense system.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Targeted economic sanctions against Syria and its allies, Iran and Russian Federation could still be used.

Fifteen months into Donald Trump's presidency, the United States finds itself on the cusp of a grave constitutional emergency at home - and closer to stumbling into direct conflict with Russian Federation than at any time since the Cold War.

Trump is believed to be considering standoff missile strikes against facilities related to the production and delivery of chlorine and sarin or sarin-like agents. CNN also reported that the US used B-1 bombers, which are capable of firing cruise missiles.

"Good souls will not be humiliated", Mr Assad tweeted, while hundreds of Syrians gathered in the capital of Damascus where they flashed victory signs and waved flags in scenes of defiance after the early morning barrage.

Asked specifically about the prospect of military action, Trump said: "Nothing's off the table".

Assad is not going to be forced out of office.

Trump did not detail what a strike on Syria would look like, or whether these would be US missiles. "Russian military police units will be deployed to the city of Douma to ensure security, maintain law and order and arrange assistance to the local population", Poznikhir told reporters.

The US-led operation won broad Western support.

Pictures and video footage of the aftermath of another chemical weapons attack blamed on Syrian dictator Bashar Assad are hard to take.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the attack "necessary and appropriate".

Several countries led by the US are weighing military strikes in response to the Assad regime's chemical attack that killed dozens of people and affected 500 others in the Syrian town of Douma, in the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta. Or will they be extended strikes that serve the broader objective of undermining the regime's military capabilities?

Some lawmakers, meanwhile, are warning the administration that military action in Syria would require congressional authorization, though House Speaker Paul Ryan downplayed those concerns during a news conference. The participation of British and French forces enables Trump to assert a wider worldwide commitment against the use of chemical weapons, but the multi-pronged attack carries the risk of Russian retaliation.

Speaking during a visit to Birmingham on Wednesday, Mrs May again said the use of chemical weapons by the regime "cannot go unchallenged" as she reaffirmed her intention to continue working with the UK's "closest allies". After planning an attack and seeking congressional approval, Obama backed down and agreed to a scheme whereby Russian Federation supposedly would ensure the elimination of Assad's chemical weapons stockpile. "I suspect, however they'll think long and hard about it".

Assad's Barzah research and development center in Damascus was destroyed, McKenzie said.

"It does not exist anymore", he added.

French President Emanuel Macron has called for a "strong, united and resolute" response.

He said the strikes were unlikely to curb the government's ability to produce or launch new attacks. There is an urgent need to protect the world from a trajectory on which predatory and rogue regimes are emboldened to break the longstanding taboo on chemical weapons.

At the U.N. Security Council Tuesday, Russia vetoed a USA -drafted plan that would have set up a commission to investigate and assign blame for the chemical weapons attack.

McKenzie confirmed there was no Russian Federation response and said Syrian air defenses had "no material effect" on the incoming barrage. British officials said up to 75 people were killed.

That assault prompted the United States to launch several dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Wednesday that the US and its allies are mulling how to respond to the attack.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, based in the Netherlands, announced it was sending a fact-finding team to the site of the attack outside Damascus, and it was due to arrive Saturday. Some 40,000 people, including thousands of rebels and their families, are leaving Douma for opposition areas in northern Syria under the agreement. France is already involved in the USA -led coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.

In London, British Prime Minister Theresa May held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss support for US action against the Syrian regime. Since that did not work, a more intense attack would aim to degrade his ability to carry out further such attacks, and would try to do this by hitting Syrian aircraft, military depots and chemical facilities, among other things.
