Jay Rodriguez has criticised the Brighton & Hove Albion defender Gaëtan Bong for a "serious and damaging slur" over the allegations of racism against the West Bromwich Albion forward.

The 28-year-old was accused of using "abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race" towards Brighton's Gaetan Bong during Albion's 2-0 win in January.

Rodriguez, who has played for England, denied the charge and requested a personal hearing which took place at the FA's headquarters at Wembley Stadium Wednesday.

"Having considered all the evidence, the Independent Regulatory Commission determined that on the balance of probabilities the allegation was not proven".

He faced a five-game ban if found guilty but the club backed the former Southampton man throughout the disciplinary process and were pleased with the verdict.

West Brom, bottom of the Premier League, responded to Friday's announcement by saying how "delighted" they were for Rodriguez.

Bong, the Cameroon global, alleged Rodriguez said "you're black and you stink" during a row between the two.

The 26-year-old said, "It has been a hard and strained period for me and my family because this allegation brought a serious and damaging slur on my character". The FA is completely satisfied that this was a complaint made in absolute good faith.

The England global thanked those who had given evidence supporting him at the hearing, as well as his West Brom team mates, club staff and fans for their backing "during this unpleasant process", as well as his family.

"I have maintained my innocence from the moment Gaetan Bong made the allegation".
