Delhi jeweller jumps off DRI building after 6 kg gold 213 kg silver seized from residence

A jeweller from Delhi committed suicide by jumping off the sixth floor of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence building on Wednesday, PTI reported. The DRI had called the businessman for questioning in the gold smuggling case. The jeweler has been identified as Gaurav Gupta and the DRI officials had raided his house and shop at Shalimar Bagh April 24 and 25.

It was revealed that police a raid was conducted in three warehouses in Shalimar bagh area after receiving information.

Police said Mohammad Umar was working with seven labourers at the Delhi Jal Board site.

Gupta was neither summoned nor arrested by the DRI, official added. The estimated value of the items seized is almost Rs. 13 crore. The DRI had reportedly seized a locker during one of the raids on April 25.

After the raids, the 40-year-old went to the DRI office and entered the building after getting a visitor's slip.

"Gupta's father was asked to accompany the staff and open the locker, while Gupta was asked to wait inside the room", the officer said.

The agency stressed that Gaurav Gupta had "neither been summoned nor arrested". "He was taken to Safdarjang hospital by officers", read a statement by DRI.
