Forensic Architecture

Comprising architects, scholars, filmmakers, software developers, journalists, archaeologists, and lawyers, Forensic Architecture is an independent research organization that is based at Goldsmiths, University of London. It is now developing a "3D video" of the Grenfell Tower fire last June using crowdsourced smartphone footage, envisioned as a free online archive.

Alex Farquharson, the director of Tate Britain and the chair of the prize's jury, said in a statement, "Following a thoughtful and rigorous debate, this year's jury has chosen an outstanding group of artists, all of whom are tackling the most pressing political and humanitarian issues of today". Two of the films he's nominated for are inspired by his father and great-uncle.

Tate in London has named the shortlisted artists for its 2018 Turner Prize.

A viral Facebook livestream of the aftermath of a police shooting was the catalyst for Thompson's nominated film Autoportrait (2017), a new commission by Chisenhale Gallery in London. (At 30, he is by far the youngest of the nominees.) The Auckland-born artist produced a meditative black-and-white 35mm portrait of Diamond Reynolds, the woman who broadcast the moments after her partner, Philando Castile, was shot by a Minnesota police officer at a traffic stop in July 2016. The work is now on show at the Photographers' Gallery in London (until 3 June), as Thompson is one of the four artists shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. Tripoli Cancelled (2017), exploring a week in the life of a man who has spent a decade alone in an abandoned airport, is the artist's first fiction film.

But what was most notable about the announcement event, though, was how little we saw of the artists' work - surprisingly considering how easy it would have been to show film clips - and how much we were subjected to the advocacy of the judges (critic Oliver Basciano, curator Lisa Le Feuvre and novelist Tom McCarthy).

The victor of the 2018 Turner Prize is set to be announced in December. An exhibition of work by the nominated artists will be staged at the museum from September 25 to January 6, 2019, and the victor of the prestigious contemporary arts award, who will receive $35,000, will be announced at an awards ceremony in December.
