Bellinger seemed to be experiencing some discomfort after hitting a double in the fifth inning.

"There's certain expectations about the way we play the game", Roberts said, per McCullough.

Roberts' Dodgers entered Sunday with a 12-14 record, placing them seven games behind Arizona for first in the division.

Bellinger told reporters following the game he had been unaware at the time what the reason was for being benched, but he was very surprised.

According to McCullough, Roberts said he spoke to Bellinger earlier in the week in regard to his effort. "Just put on my jacket, went to the railing and watched the game". He insisted he always plays the game hard. I took kind of a big swing on a curveball, and I wasn't trying to make an out running to third [base].

Obviously, Bellinger said it is Triples Alley but the team is down by four and that was his reasoning, and his decision and he does not think there was anything wrong with it.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have not gotten off to a good start this season, but that's not stopping Dave Roberts from having confidence in his club.
