Cops raid the home of Najib

Policemen were said to be conducting searches on the residence of former Prime Minister Najib Razak in Taman Duta and a high-end condo in Pavilion Residences in Bukit Bintang tonight.

At about 8.30am, he said some officers went to a room and made a decision to drill open a safe.

"Although the police team said that they would be leaving after packing the last box. drilling continues although it is past 5 p.m now and there is absolutely no peace and quiet at his residence", Najib's lawyer, Harpal Singh Grewal, said in a statement to journalists outside the house in the early evening. Few would have predicted such a scenario before a May 9 general election that he was expected to win.

Simultaneous raids on two apartments, prime minister's office and official residence and Najib's home, says head of federal commercial crime unit.

"We are in the midst of collecting information, we will have more details once we have completed our search", he said, confirming that the searches were related to investigations into the 1MDB scandal that had dogged Mr Najib since 2015.

Authorities in at least six countries are investigating the multi-billion-dollar scandal. Then the old safe - and how to get it open - emerged as a stumbling block after Najib's lawyer said it had not been unlocked in two decades because the family had lost the key. The reportedly seized handbags and other personal items.

Mr Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor have been blacklisted by the Immigration Department and can not leave the country.

Police said that the search was not over.

"This harassment has continued for nearly 18 hours and nothing meaningful has come from the search".

Mr Harpal also criticised the timing of the raid, saying that Mr Najib's family and staff were unable to properly conduct their religious obligations prior to the opening of fast on the first day of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan which falls on Thursday. "When it is necessary to arrest, we will make the arrest according to the law". There was no immediate word on what was in the boxes.
