Life ban for Saudi referee Fahad al Mirdasi over bribery

While SAFF has opted to ban Al Mirdasi with immediate effect and "to deprive him from participating in any football activity for life", it has also requested FIFA to prevent him from officiating at the upcoming World Cup.

The Saudi Football Federation have banned referee Fahad al-Mirdasi for life over bribery and urged FIFA to remove him from the pool of referees for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 32-year-old is one of Saudi Arabia's most prominent referees and one of five Arab referees chosen by Federation Internationale de Football Association to officiate at the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia.

'He confirmed that he had evidence which highlights Al Mirdasi offering help for money.

Mirdasi eventually confessed to soliciting Sanayeh for money to influence the outcome of the match, which resulted in the Saudi star being given a lifetime ban.

"After the president of Ittihad club presented what was in his possession to the Federation of Football, the Saudi Federation sent this conversation to the Chairman of the General Directorate of Sport, who in turn informed the competent authorities in all details".

He was then pulled from the game with an investigation into the referee by the ethics committee.

Federation Internationale de Football Association noted the Saudi ban and was seeking more information on Al Mirdasi, one of six referees from Asia named to work at the World Cup.

British former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg - who became Saudi Arabia's head of referees in February 2017 - replaced Al Mirdasi for Saturday's King's Cup final, which Al Ittihad won 3-1 after extra time.

The 32-year-old referee made the approach to Al Ittihad chief Hamad Al-Senaie, who immediately handed over the WhatsApp messages to SAFF officials, Reuters reported.
