Eversource asked for patience as its crews worked to restore power in Brookfield and other towns following Tuesday's storms

The company is advising customers in the hardest hit areas near Danbury and Newtown that they may be without power for multiple days.

After severe storms knocked down large trees behind a home on Candlewood Lake Road in Brookfield, the owner is wondering whether tornados were to blame.

Facing hard conditions, Eversource tree and line crews are working non-stop to fix the extensive damage caused by straight-line winds, lightning and hail that ripped through Connecticut Tuesday afternoon.

The town's police chief said crews from 20 different departments worked through the night to clear roads and do welfare checks.

"It's very unsafe", he said.

He says the storm was so bad that he and his son were trapped in a park for about an hour before it was safe to get out.

Eversource said more than 70,000 of its overall customers have already had their power restored - but there were another 79,000 to go.

Eversource says customers should report outages at its website or by calling 800-286-2000.
