Israel strikes Iranian targets in Syria after rocket fire on Golan Heights

"Israel has military dominance and free hand to carry out those kinds of attacks" on targets inside Syria, said Gary Samore, who served as a deputy national security adviser to former United States president George W. Bush.

Tehran, meanwhile, is under pressure from the USA and Western allies to negotiate a new deal, one that goes beyond restricting the nuclear program to curb Iran's military power in the region. It was the most serious military confrontation between Israel and Iran to date and Israel's biggest strike in Syria since the 1973 war. Fill us in on the details.

Well Semin... Israel says Thursday's attack was its largest barrage in Syria since the start of the civil war there seven years ago and was also a clear warning to Iran.

Iranian forces in Syria launched a rocket attack on Israeli army bases in the Golan Heights early on Thursday, Israel said, prompting one of the heaviest Israeli barrages in Syria since the conflict there began in 2011.

Syria's military says overnight Israeli airstrikes killed three people, wounded two and destroyed a radar station, an ammunition warehouse, and damaged a number of air defense units.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was a sharp critic of the Iran nuclear deal.

Ghasemi, the foreign ministry spokesman, said the direct attacks on Syria come as the government of Assad is regaining control of territories from rebel fighters, accusing Israel and the United States of supporting the opposition which he called "terrorists". Israel fears that will allow Iran to more easily transfer weapons to Hezbollah, Lebanon's powerful Shiite guerrilla force, and reinforce the militant group's influence over the region.

A successful terrorist attack of this kind would inevitably alter the picture, pushing Israel and Iran to the brink of a full-scale war.

"The main goal of these attacks, supported by the United States, is to divert public opinion from the behavior of the American president (and) his decision to leave the agreement", added Boroujerdi, referring to President Donald Trump's decision this week to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.

Both Russia and Iran have intervened in war-torn Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Iran's nuclear system is by no means the only and even the very pressing threat which the nation poses to Israel.

The White House also condemned Iran's "provocative attack" in a statement, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders saying Iran has deployed into Syria "offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel".

War is, though, a different probability - and also one for the Israeli public is still being prepared almost hour by hour.

Israel says the targets included weapons storage facilities, logistics centers, intelligence sites and logistic sites used by elite Iranian forces in Syria. "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood". "Whatever happens in Syria happens under the command of the Syrians", said analyst Mohammad Marandi, who was part of Iran's negotiation team leading up to the nuclear deal.

"Israel has entered a risky game", Allaeddine Boroujerdi said during a visit to the Portuguese capital Lisbon.

Pro-Iranian factions have in the past attacked Israeli tourists overseas or Jewish organisations, notably in Latin America. So far Russian Federation has done little if anything to limit the Israeli air force's freedom of movement in the skies over Lebanon and Syria.

The two sides have been on a collision course for months. Hours later, state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV broadcast a live feed of Syrian air defenses firing into the sky above the capital, and loud explosions and air defense firing were heard through the night. Israel responded by attacking anti-aircraft positions in Syria, but an Israeli warplane was shot down during the battle.
