Payet, the former West Ham midfielder now at Marseille, will miss this summer's tournament in Russian Federation after aggravating a muscle injury during his side's Europa League final defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Payet was one of France's stars at Euro 2016, when they reached the final as hosts before losing to Portugal.

After returning from injury at the end of Manchester City's record-breaking Premier League title success, Benjamin Mendy has done enough to earn a place, although team-mate Aymeric Laporte - City's record signing - misses out.

Former Newcastle forward Florian Thauvin takes one of the attacking places ahead of Lacazette and Martial.

"It always seems impossible until it's done", wrote Mendy on Twitter.

France are without defender Laurent Koscielny, who suffered a major Achilles injury in Arsenal's Europa League semi-final against Atletico.

Reserve list: Wissam Ben Yedder (Sevilla), Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich) Benoit Costil (Bordeaux), Mathieu Debuchy (Saint-Etienne), Lucas Digne (Barcelona), Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal), Anthony Martial (Manchester United), Adrien Rabiot (PSG), Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace), Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham), Kurt Zouma (Stoke City - on loan from Chelsea).

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's global exile goes on - he has not played for France since October 2015 after being accused of involvement in a blackmail affair involving a sextape.

"I make decisions for the good of the France team".

France have been drawn in Group C at the World Cup, meaning they will face Australia, Peru and Denmark.
