Yeddyurappa: the clerk who made it big in corridors of power

JDS flaf

JDS flaf

The Congress and JD (S), which have already announced post-poll tie-up, have won 78 and 37 seats respectively. Federal Ministers Prakesh Javadekar, Dharmendra Pradhan and JP Nadda, plus Yeddyurappa and other state leaders were working on options that include MLAs from the Congress and the JD (S) being absent when the trust vote is conducted; that would reduce the mark required for a simple majority.

The governor plays a similar role in the states. Kumaraswamy said this was an opportunity given by God to undo his mistakes and remove the black spot by allying with the Congress party. And so what if the third-placed party has won only 38 seats in a Legislative Assembly of 224, minus two seats where polling will be held later! Both the BJP and the Congress-JD (S) combine would want their man considering the fact that the pro-tem speaker will conduct the floor test.

Senior lawyer and jurist Ram Jethmalani today moved the Supreme Court in his personal capacity against the Karnataka governor's decision to invite the BJP to form government in the state, saying it was a "gross abuse of constitutional power". Unless some of the MLAs belonging to the Congress or the JD (S) switch over, there is no way the BJP could achieve majority in the Assembly. They tried to convince him that trying to stop the BJP from getting power was the best way to prove the JD (S)'s secular credentials and shed its 2006 baggage when Kumaraswamy joined hands with the BJP. The BJP now has the support of 105 MLAs. In a tweet, he also expressed hope that the new BJP government in the state under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance will fulfil people's aspirations. In 2007, he was in the Chief Ministerial gaadi for seven days. Well, that's the weighty responsibility the leaders of Congress and JDS will have until the day when BS Yeddyurappa proves his majority on the floor of the house. He said, "Governor has assured that he will take action as per the Constitution".

It is important to analyse if what the Karnataka governor has done is rational and fair and not arbitrary and malafide.

Kumaraswamy said that "BJP's Ashwamedha Yatra started in north has been stopped in Karnataka". Figures calculated by television channels suggest that Modi had a better strike rate in terms of votes than Gandhi, and that Modi's electioneering combined with that Amit Shah, the BJP president, and Yogi Adityanath, the controversial Hindu priest-turned politician who is chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, won widespread support, especially among young voters. Even though they have 104 seats, they 8 seat sort of the magic number to form the government. The BJP increased its tally by 65 seats. In Goa, the Governor did not invite the single largest party, the Congress, but the post-poll alliance of the BJP and the Goa Forward Party and the MGP. Even the most pious community of Lingaysts was divided by the Congress led Government. Its delegation later met the Governor to stake claim to form the new government.

Unlike Gujarat, which saw a clear urban-rural divide with the BJP dominating the urban belt, the Karnataka capital was closely fought.
