Back in 2013, Disney and Lucasfilm announced one was in development with Josh Trank (Chronicle, Fantastic 4) as director, to follow Rogue One, but once Trank left the project, the new adventures of old Boba Fett were put on the back burner.

Is Harrison Ford in the new Han Solo movie, Solo: A Star Wars story?

There's been a lot of chatter about a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, with Stephen Daldry eyed to direct, and rumours around characters such as Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, and - largely because of Donald Glover's portrayal - Lando Calrissian.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg was previously reported to be working on a Boba Fett film, after producing several previous Star Wars films (in addition to X-Men films).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Logan and The Wolverine James Mangold has signed on to write and direct a Boba Fett spinoff.

Lucasfilm is supposedly developing a bunch of other movies based on the Star Wars universe as well.

Mangold received a Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award nomination for his work on Logan, and also directed acclaimed movies including 1999's Girl, Interrupted and 2005's Walk the Line. His appearance in 1983's Return of the Jedi wasn't as menacing, though: a partially blind Han Solo inadvertently knocked Boba into the dreaded Sarlacc pit.

The prequel trilogy tried to explain his origin, but it ended up being more style than substance, a backdrop storyline merely done to set him up as a hired gun in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

This was mostly because he just looked really cool and could fly. So it was something that, when we realized that we wanted someone in the crime world above Dryden, we wanted it to feel like there were bigger fish than even the ones we get to meet in this movie.

But one thing hasn't changed: Disney is still releasing Star Wars spinoffs. Jon Favreau's upcoming, live-action Star Wars TV series is introducing an entirely new cast of characters.
