Doctor Virginia Apgar created the Apgar test to check on the health of newborn babies.

The American anesthesiologist would have been celebrating her 109th birthday.

Apgar, who was born in 1909 in Westfield, New Jersey, developed the now ubiquitous Apgar score in 1952.

The Apgar in the Apgar Score is an acronym for Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiratory effort. Upon clicking on the illustration, Dr Apgar is seen observing babies as they are and writing on her notepad.

The assessment has been called the "birth of clinical neonatology" and credited with not only reducing infant mortality but also changing health care's approach to the birth process to be more effectively focus on mother and child and the effects of delivery on the baby.

Depending on the observed condition, each category is scored with 0, 1, or 2.

Thursday's Google Doodle appeared for internet users in the United States, as well as Japan, India, Israel, Chile, Argentina, Australia and several European nations. An Apgar Score between 4 and 6 may mean some medical intervention is needed.

The doctor developed a newborn infant's neonatal prognosis, known as the Apgar Score, which is taken within minutes of birth and has become standard practice in hospitals worldwide. "A Guide to Birth Defects" published in collaboration with Joan Beck. She attended Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and in 1933, she graduated fourth in her class before completing a residency in surgery at P&S in 1937. She received a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University in 1959, and was a director at the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which is know known as the March of Dimes. And yet, when her division was upgraded to a department, she was passed over for the chair position in favor of a male colleague. The Apgar score was quickly adopted by hospitals across the US and eventually worldwide and is credited for lowering the national infant mortality rate. She died of liver cirrhosis on August 7, 1974.

She was appointed the first woman Professor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1949, according to a biography of the clinician at the Columbia University website. She breathed her last at the age of 65.
