US suicide rates increased more than 25% since 1999, CDC says

Firearm ownership is common, and Delaney said "the literature is getting pretty strong" that states with easier access to guns have higher suicide rates. Overall, the rate rose to 15.4 per 100,000 in 2014-2016 from 12.3 per 100,000 in 1999-2001. Among the top 10, suicide, Alzheimer's, and drug overdoses are the only ones increasing, CDC officials say.

In 2016, 745 suicides were reported in Minnesota.

The CDC researchers found that more than half of Americans who died by suicide had not been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

Experts note that mental illness may have been underreported in the study, either because the person who killed themself had not yet been diagnosed or because those left behind were not aware their loved one's condition. Information about contributing circumstances for those who died by suicide was obtained via the National Violent Death Reporting System, which is relatively new and in place in only 27 states. About 45 percent were dealing with relationship problems or loss, about 51 percent experienced life stressors, and about 33 percent encountered recent crises.

This finding follows a 2017 CDC report that detailed the rise of suicide prevalence in rural United States counties. "If we only look at this as a mental health issue, we won't make the progress that we need".

"Too many Kansans are lost to suicide each year", KDADS Secretary Tim Keck said. "Over time, I figured out and learned through trial and error what worked for me to get past that feeling", said Mike Bushman of Naperville. While the study did not look at the potential reasons why that might be, Schuchat offered a possible explanation.

- A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a troubling rise in the nation's suicide rates.

Suicide by stateThe study also broke down the data by state and found suicide rates varied widely. The increases were particularly stark in the states in the intermountain West, including Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, North and South Dakota, Kansas, Minnesota and Oklahoma. The rate increase in Missouri was 36.4 percent. Nevada was the only state to see a decrease. For instance, states can provide temporary help to those at risk, health care systems can provide phone or online treatment where services are not accessible, and schools can teach students how to manage stress.

A range of strategies could help prevent suicides, from expanding access to mental and behavioral health care to improving education around individual coping skills and institutional supports, the report says.

Physical health problems were present in about a fifth of suicide victims, the CDC found.

Brown said warning signs can include something as simple as talkative people becoming more quiet or the opposite- those who are normally quiet becoming more verbal; or letting their hygiene go as well as verbal cues. It's important to keep in mind to remove access to firearms, medications, or any other potential tools they might use to harm themsevles. The report also called for greater promotion of the national suicide prevention hotline across the state, especially in rural areas. All calls are confidential.
