The UN chief said the world must unite to "beat plastic pollution" now, noting that microplastic particles in the ocean, "now outnumber stars in our galaxy".

The environment ministry had said the pan-India events include cleanliness campaigns by state governments, cleaning of 24 beaches and 24 rivers in 19 states, making national parks and sanctuaries plastic free, media as well as social media campaigns and organising Envithon mini-marathons in five other cities, besides Delhi.

"While we don't have figures for their use here, what we do know is that plastic straws are nearly impossible to recycle because they of their size and lightness".

"We need to be wary of pledges like this that sound good, but in reality allow the rise of plastic packaging production in our lives and our oceans, all while companies pose as green leaders", says Hunter. Mr Modi mentioned that the per-capita plastic consumption in India is much lower than any part of the developed world. United Nations Environment head Erik Solheim believes that only India can help itself when it comes to "Beat Plastic Pollution" - this year's theme of World's Environment Day that the country is hosting - or to rustle up the finances for this.

"We solicit for your collaboration and support in educating and informing our people on the giant strides this administration is doing in the Environment sector".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that there would be more plastic than fish by 2050 if the present trends continue.

He said available data indicated that plastic waste accounted for 95 per cent of total amount of waste generated in terms of weight, while plastic use had been in existence for over 70 years.

"India and China, frankly speaking, are in the lead of solving their environment issues, obviously there had been challenges", he said.

World Environment Day (WED) celebrations has already begun in the national capital and across the country from June. Our ongoing drives to conserve and revive water bodies are addressing the pressing problem of clogging by plastic wastes.
