In battle of tweets, Canadas Trudeau dismisses Trump critique

Italy's PM backs Trump on including Russia into G8

After the conclusion of the G7 summit in Quebec on Sunday, President Donald Trump and his top economic advisers hurled a barrage of insults at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Now, his chief economic advisor Larry Kudlow has waded in, saying Mr Trudeau was trying to make Mr Trump look weak before his summit with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Trudeau also said Canada would move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1 in response to tariffs on steel and aluminium imports into the U.S. from Canada, Mexico and European Union (EU) countries announced by Trump on May 31.

It follows a chaotic G7 summit in Quebec at the weekend, when U.S. president Donald Trump withdrew his endorsement of a joint communique, accusing Mr Trudeau of being "dishonest and weak". Trudeau, who threatened retaliatory tariffs, also said Canada would not be "pushed around".

Asked if these were statements from the President, Navarro said they were his words, but that they reflected "the sentiment that was on Air Force One".

Trump announced after Trudeau's press conference that the USA would not sign onto the G-7 communique.

Trump in another tweet called Trudeau "meek and mild" as well as "very dishonest and weak".

Donald Trump accused the summit's chairman Justin Trudeau of dishonesty.

Asked what Trudeau did that amounted to betrayal, Kudlow criticized the Canadian leader for holding a press conference in which he called USA tariffs "insulting".

"He was polarizing. He really kind of stabbed us in the back", Kudlow, who literally at times was shaking with rage, said on CNN's "State of the Union".

France warned Sunday that "fits of anger" could not dictate global cooperation after US President Donald Trump abruptly rejected a joint statement agreed following a bad-tempered G7 summit in Canada. "Trudeau stuck our president in the back and that will not stand".

Speaking on US broadcaster Fox News, US trade adviser Peter Navarro blamed Canada for the disastrous ending to the G7 summit. Canada, and Trudeau, stabbed American in the back, they say. John McCain who responded with a very different message for US allies: "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't".

"I highlighted directly to the president that Canadians did not take it lightly, the United States' move forward with significant tariffs on our steel and aluminum industry", began Trudeau.

Kudlow said that Trudeau's press conference criticisms of Trump's trade tariffs were inappropriate.

He did him a favour and he was even willing to sign that socialist communique.

The Illinois Democrat acknowledged that Trudeau's tough talk with Trump may play well domestically, but said it would have longer-term negative implications. "He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip".
