Her academic accolades gave her the honor of being the valedictorian at Petaluma High School in California, which allowed her to give a commencement speech during her graduation on June 2.

Even before graduation, Seitz said officials from the school were putting pressure on her to avoid any mention of the alleged assaults.

Lulabel Seitz, 17, says school administrators cut off her microphone just as she was going to bring up alleged sexual assaults at her high school.

Petaluma High School valedictorian Lulabel Seitz. But that doesn't help.

However, her mic was turned off when she got to the following part of her speech: "The class of 2018 has demonstrated time and time again that we may be a new generation, but we are not too young to speak up, to dream and to create change". "This is for my class that stood up and said 'let her speak.' Even if the administration doesn't give me a mic, I still want to speak". The person was known to her.

"They just told me to not talk about it because it wouldn't help", she told CNN a week after the graduation ceremony.

Seitz completed three years of college classwork at two nearby schools while in high school and was involved in student government, the Press Democrat reported.

Some students seemed to understand the school's decision to cut the mic, even if they mostly agreed with the content of the speech, ABC 7 reported.

Speaking to local newspaperThe Press Democrat, Stirrat explained that Seitz's approved speech did not include references to assault. "We certainly would have considered such an addition, provided no individuals were named or defamed". She is the granddaughter of Filipino immigrants and her parents dropped out of high school. As a Valedictorian, she used her speech as a podium to highlight the value of determination to her fellow seniors. Learning on a campus in which some people defend perpetrators of sexual assault and silence their victims - we didn't let that drag us down. Time and time again, the Class of 2018 has demonstrated that although we may be a new generation, we are not too young to speak up, to dream, and to create tangible, positive change.

Petaluma high principal told the San Francisco Chronicle that the school was trying to make sure the graduation ceremony was appropriate and lovely. "So they had no reason to think I was going to call out somebody in particular".

"We're all celebrating us leaving, you know?" "I realized that this is a big injustice and needs to be spoken about".

Seitz said, "We have all had unlikely dreams, and overcome obstacles to achieve them, because adversity isn't the rare, monumental idea we made it out to be in our freshman year English essays".
