Ms Freeland told reporters that she had met with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Friday and would speak to him later on Sunday, adding that she believes a deal to renew the North American Free Trade Agreement is still possible.

What caused the rift?

Trump made the comments in tweets from Air Force One as he headed to Singapore for his summit with Kim, stepping back from the generally positive tone that had ended the two-day meeting in Quebec.

In the week leading up to the the G-7 Summit President Trump engaged in the most Trumpian sort of diplomacy: he very publicly attacked out closest allies.

US President Donald Trump has fired off a string of angry tweets criticising America's closest allies hours after leaving a divisive G7 summit in Canada.

But a war of words is as interesting to some segments of the press as any other kind of war, and the Sunday shows were filled with discussion of the Trump-Trudeau contretemps.

The president did not specify which exact remarks he considered to be false.

While President Donald Trump's split with the G7 conference was the main focus of the Quebec summit over the weekend, another controversy was brewing in the shadows. Bob Corker has introduced legislation that would roll back the President's power to impose tariffs like the ones he introduced earlier this month on steel and aluminum on USA allies, but Republican leaders don't appear eager to take it up even as an amendment to already-moving legislation.

Based on that account, Trudeau wasn't the only G-7 leader who toned down the rhetoric in direct talks.

Trudeau and the rest of the G-7 failed to seize on Trump's proposal.

- Sen. Susan Collins (@SenatorCollins) June 10, 2018Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal.

According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with US (guess they were bragging and got caught!).

On June 7 - the eve of Trudeau's G7 summit - Trump sends out another missive - "Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things. but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!" "Instead, we act then too". "For the president the United States to suggest that all is forgotten, that that doesn't matter, that we are fine with one country annexing another country's sovereign territory, and we should just welcome them with open arms back into a community of democracies, is outrageous".

Abe stressed the unity of members in support of fair trade, while refraining from directly repeating Japan's concern about the USA levies, during the two-day summit through Saturday in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. Due to Canada's protectionist dairy industry, Canadian farmers earn much more per liter of milk.

Of course, harsh language about Canada and its leader isn't just coming from Trump's advisers. "I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!" he wrote.

"It was a betrayal", Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union". The former are targeted with a 25-percent tariff, while a 2.5 percent tariff applies on other vehicles.

"Are we executing Putin's diplomatic and national security strategy or AMERICA's diplomatic and national security strategy?"

Clearly, Mr. Trump saw things differently.

That argument, however, has rarely been used by WTO member states, partially because proving that the exception applies is usually hard and virtually impossible in Trump's case. Taking to Twitter, he said that there is a "special place in heaven" for Trudeau.

But unity was torn apart when the USA president took exception to Mr Trudeau calling United States policy "insulting".
