Reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton said he was anxious throughout the duration of the Canadian Grand Prix that his engine would fail, as he relinquished the points lead to Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel picked up his second career victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the first for Ferrari in Montreal since Michael Schumacher won three in a row from 2002-04.

Hamilton, fourth at the time, headed into the pit lane on lap 16 of this 70-lap race, but the early change of tyres allowed Ricciardo to usurp the Mercedes vehicle.

The four-time world champion sped on after the checkered flag was waved one lap too early, finishing his wire-to-wire victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday (Monday, Manila time) to claim his third win of the year and the lead in the Formula One standings.

"Perfect is a good way to describe this", said a delighted Vettel.

"After a long stretch here without a Ferrari win, I looked around and the people are so very happy". It's Vettel's fourth pole on the Ile Notre-Dame, and his first since 2013.

"I think Ferrari have had a slightly better package all round, they've been doing a slightly better job so we've got to do more".

The Canadian Grand Prix top three in qualifying: Valteri Bottas (2nd), Sebastian Vettel (1st) and Max Verstappen (3rd). It's a three-way fight, six cars can win races and you can't take anything for granted.

"Yeah I'm fine", Hartley told his team.

Lewis Hamilton, this season's championship leader, qualified fourth while native Montrealer Lance Stroll failed to make the first cut of qualifying and posted the 17th-best time of the day. It was the seventh race on the engine so it's seen its life.

Verstappen's podium was his second of the year, and it eases some of the pressure he has felt with a series of mistakes that cost him and the Red Bull team in Azerbaijan and Monaco.

Hamilton came within a second of challenging Ricciardo late in the race, but then encountered fuel troubles.

It was Ferrari's first win in Canada since 2004 and came from their first pole there in 17 years. For me, it was pretty straightforward, and in terms of strategy we did what we wanted to do.

After falling behind Ricciardo during those stops, Hamilton was then vulnerable to Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari also getting ahead of him when the Finn stopped much later in the race, but he hung on to fifth place as Raikkonen emerged from the pits just behind him at Turn 2.

The same issue occurred at the 2014 Chinese Grand Prix and Whiting believes it is due to a misinterpretation of the lap countdown on F1's world feed.
