White House Economic Adviser: Canada's Trudeau 'Stabbed Us In The Back'

US signs G-7 declaration calling for reduction of tariffs after tense summit with allies

US signs G-7 declaration calling for reduction of tariffs after tense summit with allies

"There remain good reasons to fight for the transatlantic partnership", she said, adding that the current round of trade tariffs that the USA and European Union have imposed on each other did not signal the end of a partnership.

Unbowed, Trump tweeted anew Monday morning from Singapore: "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal".

Trump said in another tweet that Trudeau was "meek and mild" during their private meeting, only to hold a news conference calling the USA tariffs "insulting".

Trump on Sunday went on to criticize the European Union for having a $151 billion trade surplus with the USA, when in fact it is $101 billion, according to the Associated Press.

Trump had arrived in Singapore late on Sunday for the summit with North Korean leader King Jong Un that could lay the groundwork for ending a nuclear stand-off between the old foes.

Mr Trump's looming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un heightened tension, and White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Mr Trudeau of betraying Mr Trump with "polarising" statements on trade policy that risked making the United States leader look weak on the eve of the historic North Korea summit.

Also in response, Larry Kudlow, director of the White House's National Economic Council, said on Sunday in an interview with CNN that Trudeau betrayed Trump with "polarizing" statements on US trade policy. "Prime Minister Trudeau may reap some political benefit through feuding with President Trump, but by engaging with the President on the terms he has so far, instead of on mutually productive ones, he is imperiling the economic well-being of millions of Canadians and Americans".

Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday he is unsure why the Trump administration is heavily focused on trade relations with Canada, being that the northern neighbor is one of the strongest allies of the U.S.

But he got direct personal support from some European leaders.

Mr Trump has also attacked Mr Trudeau personally, suggesting the Canadian prime minister is "very dishonest and weak" and "acts hurt when called out".

"He held a press conference and he said the U.S.is insulting". "And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

The majority of Canadian exports go to the United States, making Canada uniquely vulnerable to a US trade war. That was a part of Trudeau's mistake.

White House Director of Trade Policy Peter Navarro, center, dodges the press after speaking on Fox News at the White House in Washington, DC, on June 4, 2018. I believe that. John McCain believes it. there's a movement all over the world to look inward, not outward, and I think it's a mistake.

Merkel described Trump's decision to withdraw his approval of the joint communique following the G7 summit in Canada as a "sobering experience".

"The G7 was a forum for friends - democracies with the same value system - to discuss issues of common interest".

Trump spent Friday participating in the rituals of the G7, including the formal greeting by host Trudeau, a group photo in front of the sparkling St. Lawrence River and a working lunch of Arctic char and buckwheat salad.

Earlier this year, Mr Trump had criticised India over import duty on the iconic Harley-Davidson motorcycles and had threatened to increase the import tariff on "thousands and thousands" of Indian motorcycles to the US.

"Justin acts hurt when called out!" the USA president said in his latest Tweet.

In addition to Canada, China and Mexico make up America's top three trading partners. "We make commitments and keep to them", a statement from the French presidency quoted by AFP news agency said.
