An armed man claiming to have a bomb has taken three people including a pregnant woman hostage in Paris. A Paris police official told CBS News there was no immediate indication of a link to terrorism, however members of the force's elite serious crime unit, known as the BRI, were on the scene.

The hostage-taker reportedly entered the building in Rue des Petites Ecuries, pretending to be a food-delivery courier, at around 4pm local time.

The man reportedly asked for the Iranian embassy to be contacted but the police did not confirm the report.

There were two people taken hostage, according to initial reports.

The area around the incident in the 10th arrondissement of Paris was ringed off by police.

Crowds of bystanders were held back by a security perimeter at the site, where police and rescue workers were massed, deploying at least one remote-controlled robot on tracks toward the building where the armed man had barricaded himself.

Police initially said the hostage scene was unfolding in an office in the building, but soon stopped communicating details to journalists.

Negotiations with the suspect were taking place, according to an Interior Ministry official who couldn't be identified because the operation was in progress.
