CDC: 'Throw away' pre-cut melons after salmonella outbreak

Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon

-Food involved: Pre-cut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and fresh-cut mixed fruit containing any one of these melons.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in a Twitter post late on Sunday urged people in the eight states to check the "fridge and freezer for recalled pre-cut melon linked to Salmonella outbreak".

The recalled products were distributed to Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and OH and sold in clear, plastic containers at stores including Costco Wholesale Corp, Kroger Co, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart Inc, and Whole Foods, a unit of Amazon.com Inc.

The salmonella outbreak involving pre-cut melon has a high hospitalization rate and concerns pre-cut melon sold by several of the nation's high-volume grocers, but the issue looks relatively confined geographically.

According to our sister station KFOR in Oklahoma City, stores carrying the melon include Walmart, Walgreens, Whole Foods, Kroger, Costco, Jay C, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts and Trader Joe's.

The company is looking into whether products were sent to any additional stores or states.

No deaths have been reported.

If the UPC code is still on the product, consumers can check the number on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website. The CDC says the fruit was also distributed to stores in Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina.

The food-borne bacteria sickens more than 1 million people annually in the United States, most commonly presenting as temporary fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain. In some people, however, the CDC said that diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to hospitalized as the salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other places in the body.

The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the CDC.
