In an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News, Mr. Trump said he's certain that his warlike rhetoric past year against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un convinced Mr. Kim to negotiate over giving up his nuclear weapons.

North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un should know that the U.S. has a history of "quitting treaties and violating their commitments" before trusting Washington, Iran's Foreign Ministry said Monday.

"So I think the rhetoric, I hated to do it, sometimes I felt foolish doing it, but we had no choice", Trump told Hannity.

"Number one we save money - a lot".

It futher sees the U.S. and North Korea agree to "establish new relations", and 'join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula'. Trump praised what had been achieved at the summit calling it a "new chapter" in relations with the North. However, Trump said North Korea sanctions would remain in place - for now.

South Korea said last month that the issue of US troops stationed there was unrelated to any future peace treaty with North Korea and that American forces should stay even if such an agreement were signed. The country announced in 2005 it had manufactured nuclear weapons. But they are there exclusively for the defense of South Korea.

Beijing has suggested worldwide sanctions against Pyongyang could be eased, just hours after a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ended in a joint statement on "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula.

"I was surprised, frankly, because the president had said earlier that that was not necessarily going to be part of the first meeting", the Senate Armed Services Committee member told reporters at a briefing in Washington, D.C.

About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War, which ended in 1953 in an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

The Pentagon was not immediately able to flesh out Trump's remarks about suspending drills, a move the USA military has long resisted. Trump described the exercises as "very provocative" and said Pyongyang "very much appreciated" seeing the exercises end. One of North Korea's stated goals is to establish peace with the USA and ultimately see the removal of more than 30,000 US troops from the Korean Peninsula.

During the news conference, Trump said the summit would not have happened were it not for Otto Warmbier, the college student who was arrested in North Korea and practically murdered by the regime.

"Well, I think without the rhetoric we wouldn't have been here", Trump said.

According to the joint statement, both sides also agreed to recover and return remains of soldiers who were killed or missing in action during the Korean War so they can be repatriated.
