Japan's bullet train Nozomi 265 is seen after the train made a stop due to a stabbing attack at Odawara station

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) - A man with a knife went on a rampage aboard a shinkansen bullet train bound for Shin-Osaka Station from Tokyo late Saturday, killing one passenger and injuring two others, police said.

The stabbing occurred last night on board a Shinkansen train travelling from Tokyo to Osaka.

The police arrested Ichiro Kojima, a 22-year-old unemployed man, on suspicion of attempted murder when the Nozomi train made an emergency stop near Odawara Station southwest of Tokyo.

The suspected attacker told police that he had attacked the passengers, according to Odawara police official Satoshi Oiye. Police are continuing to investigate his motives, Oiye said. The police seized a weapon when they arrested Kojima. At least two knives were found at the scene of the crime.

The police suspect that Kojima had a strong intent to kill.

Afterward, witnesses said some of the passengers were crying as they fled to the other coaches, shouting "Just keep going ahead", and "He has a knife!" According to him, he didn't plan the attack and attacked the passengers of the train "only because I was highly annoyed". She had called his mobile phone several times recently but was unable to talk with Kojima directly.

The attack took place in vehicle No. 12 of the 16-car train while it was between Shin-Yokohama and Odawara stations, both in Kanagawa. A female passenger was also killed and more than 20 people were injured as the fire and smoke spread throughout the carriages.

There were about 880 passengers on board the train at the time of the incident.
