Merkel: EU will retaliate against Trump tariffs

Merkel said that Trump would probably retaliate by implementing new tariffs on German vehicles.

Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and the other leaders clashed with Trump over steel and aluminum tariffs as well as his decision to abandon a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program.

"(Trump's) withdrawal via Twitter is of course sobering and a little depressing", Merkel said, according to a translation from public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

The European leader-famed for negotiating compromise without political histrionics-gave an uncharacteristically candid and combative assessment of relations with Trump as she spoke to German channel ARD, after last week's G-7 summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin wasn't invited to the G-7 summit in Canada, although US President Donald Trump suggested he be readmitted.

We will act too, says the German Chancellor.

Out of all the official photos surfacing from the 2018 G7 Summit, there's one in particular posted on German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Instagram that's copping a lot of attention.

Trump announced in tweets following his early departure from the summit that he would refuse to sign the communiqué as a result of press conference comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In case ya missed it, the leaders of Germany, Canada, Japan, United States, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom have come together to talk global issues.

Macron also tweeted Saturday a photo of the other leaders and aides surrounding Trump, who was one of just two people sitting. He will not be attending the second day, as he is all set to leave for Singapore where is scheduled to meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un on June 12.

Some media, though, interpreted the photo as another embarrassing moment for the U.S. Esquire sighed that the photo proved how Trump was still alienating our allies.

The French president's office said in a statement: "International co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks". We are sticking to them and whoever reneges on them is showing incoherence and inconsistency. Speaking on the condition of anonymity a Canadian official told national broadcaster CBC that not only had Trudeau made these remarks prior to the meeting, on USA television last week, he had also informed Trump of his position before he went on air.

Merkel said she expected Italy's new coalition government to vote for the extension of European sanctions against Russian Federation.
