Paris incident: Armed man takes hostages

A man claiming to be armed with a bomb and revolver has taken three people hostage in Paris, police have said.

The area was evacuated and the street, rue des Petites Ecuries, was cordoned off.

"Officials will be trying to start a negotiation with the man", police union official Yves Lefebvre told BFM TV, which reported that the incident did not appear to be terrorism-related.

A pregnant woman is reportedly being held captive along with possibly two other people in Paris, according to Daily Mail.

Police initially said the hostage scene was unfolding in an office in the building, but soon stopped communicating details to journalists. But the police source said he had asked to communicate with the Iranian embassy so that they could convey a message to the French government. Police swept vehicles in the area with a device but found nothing, he said.

Shocking photos show police decked out in body armour with a local reporter warning of "an armed man".

The Evening Standard reports the attack doused the remaining two hostages in petrol.
