Some Facts About the Upcoming Kim-Trump Summit

Kim arrived with his notorious running security detail

Shortly after 9 a.m. local time, Trump and Kim walked along a white colonnade, meeting in front of a bank of 12 alternating US and North Korean flags where they shook hands. And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought to keep expectations for the summit in check.

"The underlying driver is a transformational process of Kim Jong-un leading North Korea into a new place in the region and the world", said John Delury, a professor of Chinese studies at Yonsei University in Seoul.

"The discussions between the United States and North Korea are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected", the White House said in a statement.

Some observers insist that it's the beginning of the complete denuclearisation of North Korea.

He said that the cost is all part of the $20 million Singapore is spending to host the meeting.

"I told them today, take your time".

Some people were grumbling in the wealthy city-state because of traffic jams caused by the summit and the cost of hosting two leaders with massive security needs.

It's so far unclear whether the US and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down.

Lee said the cost was worthwhile.

"It is our contribution to an worldwide endeavor which is in our profound interest", he told reporters on Sunday.

Trump and Kim may well end up branding tomorrow's summit a success. Traffic was held up in the steamy midday sun and scores of bystanders were penned in by police when Trump went to meet Lee.

Trump made the comments sitting next to Kim minutes after the two leaders shook hands for the first time, images that were broadcast worldwide. Their hotels are cordoned off with heavy security.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

In a September 2017 speech in front of the United Nations, President Trump referred to Kim as "Rocket Man" and threatened to "totally destroy North Korea", which earned a rare rebuke directly from Kim describing the president as a "frightened dog" and "mentally deranged USA dotard".

Under Kim Jong Un, the third-generation dictator of the country established in 1948, North Korea has rapidly advanced its nuclear capabilities. They believe Kim's latest engagement is aimed at getting the United States to ease the crippling sanctions that have squeezed the impoverished country.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official.

Later, they would be joined by their respective negotiating teams for discussions that could last another hour.

"Just arrived to Singapore for the Historical Summit!"

What was initially portrayed by the White House as a summit meant to completely rid the North of its nuclear weapons is now being cast as a chance to "start a dialogue" and for Trump the dealmaker to look into the eyes and take the measure of his nuclear-armed antagonist.
