Trump predicts ‘terrific relationship’ with Kim Jong Un as historic summit begins

On Monday, President Donald Trump met with the despotic leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un in Singapore to engage in nuclear talks.

Officials of the two sides held last-minute talks to lay the groundwork for the summit of the old foes, an event nearly unthinkable just months ago, when they were exchanging insults and threats that raised fears of war. In that first meeting, they'll be joined only by translators, a break from standard practice of having at least one aide present for high-stakes huddles.

"But we overcame all of them, and we are here today", Kim said during the meeting through an interpreter.

It initially was meant to rid the North of its weapons, to forge the "complete denuclearization" of the country.

Mr Lee, it said, complimented "the bold and admirable decision" by Mr Kim and Mr Trump to come together for the summit.

Trump and Kim agreed to four broad commitments, according to the signed document: to establish new U.S.

Kim is due to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong later on Sunday, Singapore's ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

After the lunch, Mr Pompeo said the USA team is looking forward to the summit tomorrow.

He also shared a photo of himself and Trump and told the entire world that he's "honored" to call the president a friend.

"We may be able to recoup a little bit of that but I think it is a cost that we're willing to pay and it's our contribution to an worldwide endeavour, which is in our profound interests", said Lee during a press conference held at the summit's global Media Centre. "Many of us are praying for a successful meeting in #Singapore".

Inside, they sat alongside each other against a backdrop of North Korean and US flags, with Kim beaming broadly as the USA president gave him a thumbs up.

He declined to comment on whether he planned to meet Trump or Kim. -North Korea contact, the official said.

Singapore was crackling with anticipation for the historic moment when Trump met Kim, the first time ever for a U.S. president and a North Korean leader. The meetings also served as an ice breaker of sorts as the teams worked to get better acquainted after decades of minimal U.S.

Many experts on North Korea remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon nuclear weapons, believing his engagement aims to get the United States to ease crippling sanctions. Kim Yong Chol has been a presence behind the scenes as well, sitting in on every inter-Korean meeting held in the lead up to the summit.

Sitting across Mr Kim and his team at the larger meeting was the U.S. leader, his chief of staff John Kelly, secretary of state Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton.

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK and the United States, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Mr Kim told Mr Lee through an interpreter.

It's not just the logistics of Kim's trip that are unclear. "Thank you very much". "I just fell in love with the country".
