Trump to Macron: EU Worse Than China on Trade

US President Donald Trump said he hoped a final summit communique would be agreed

The President said he had told fellow G7 nations that the USA requires fair market access and end to unfair trading practices.

President Donald Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron that the European Union is worse than China on trade during a meeting at the White House in April, Axios reported on Monday.

"The American president may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a six-country agreement if need be", Macron said and later tweeted in English.

European Council President Donald Tusk, who will attend the meeting of EU leaders, said in the New York Times this week "Europe must now do everything in its power to protect the trans-Atlantic bond, in spite of today's mood".

As the heads of the top industrialised democracies embarked on a two-day G-7 summit in rural Quebec, European leaders warned that Trump's stance on trade, climate, Iran and - now - Russian Federation was setting him apart.

Expectations for a major breakthrough on trade at the summit, however, remain low, with United States allies focused on avoiding rupturing the G7, which in its 42-year history has tended to seek consensus on major issues. "We will stand by them and anyone who would depart from them, once their back was turned, shows their incoherence and inconsistency", the statement said, according to Politico EU, which quoted a French publication.

In a series of tweets from Singapore, Trump kept up the tirade while contending that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal".

Investors are also concerned about the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump has threatened to terminate.

Before jumping on Air Force One to fly to Canada, which is hosting the summit in La Malbaie north of Quebec City, Trump called for a return to the body's pre-2014 "G8" formula. He then took questions from reporters for almost 20 minutes, where he threatened to terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement if he can't make a better deal with America's neighbors. "$800 Billion Trade Deficit..." On Friday, bilateral meetings preceded roundtable discussions.

In footage of the pair, Trump said of Macron: "Arm wrestling, he would be very, very tough".

Trump is set to meet Trudeau later in the day.

Moscow was expelled from the rich nations club, which sees itself as a guarantor of rules-based order and the global economy, over its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.

Both Moscow and Mr Trump have denied the allegations.
