US Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is heading to North America after a joint bid from the United States, Canada, and Mexico defeated Morocco in a landslide vote.

The North American bid beat competition from Morocco, which was hoping to become just the second African country to host soccer's biggest global tournament.

Herdman, who coached the women's national squad when Canada hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, says "we were singing O Canada with 60,000 people, alongside everyone that was watching".

"Football today is the only victor".

Every one of FIFA's 200-plus members holds a single vote, and regions tend to vote in blocks.

"Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a rare and important moment to demonstrate that we are all truly united through sport", Cordeiro said.

In eight year's time, numerous young rising stars of the United States men's national team should be in their prime as it is expected to be the first World Cup with 48 teams.

Both Mexico (1970 and 1986) and the United States (1994) have previously hosted World Cups.

The 1994 World Cup, staged by the USA, had the highest average attendance in the tournament's history, while Mexico was the first nation to host the event twice.

Italy failed to qualify for the first time since 1958, being the only one of eight teams to have won the competition who won't compete in Russian Federation. "And when it's all said and done, I think the United Bid Committee and Federation Internationale de Football Association in 2020 will have a really hard time not putting our stadium on the list for matches".

The report made the US-Canada-Mexico bid the clear favourite after rating it four out of five, and Morocco was not able to bridge the gap.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first competition where 48 nations will compete in the tournament, which is the biggest in the footballing world. That's the spirit of the World Cup.

And it's great that this family has "a wonderful tradition" of gathering on the eve of the championship in the city where the opening match is to take place, Putin added. The U.S. team failed to qualify this year.

The absence of Italy, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland and Chile, who were backed by 13,000 fans during last year's Confederations Cup, has raised the prospect of some games at the World Cup being played to smaller crowds than originally anticipated.

Canada's games will be split between three host cities with Toronto potentially hosting four games and Montreal and Edmonton taking three each.
