In a second breach, personal data such as name, address or email addresses, have been accessed.

The retailer said 5.8 million of the payment cards targeted were protected by chip and Pin, but that around 105,000 non-EU cards without chip and Pin protection were compromised.

Dixons Carphone said that "unauthorised access" of data held by the company had prompted an investigation, the hiring of external security experts and efforts to shore up its security defences.

The consumer electronics retailer said it had detected an attempt to compromise the cards in a processing system at Currys PC World and Dixons Travel, but said there was no evidence of any fraud as a result of the incident.

It said the data accessed did not contain Pin codes, card verification values (CVV) or any authentication data allowing cardholder identification or a purchase to be made.

The company said it had informed the relevant authorities, including the Information Commissioner's Office, the Financial Conduct Authority, and the police.

It goes on to offer the not-entirely-reassuring reassurance that it has "no evidence to date of any fraudulent use of the data as result of these incidents" before admitting the compromised information included (incomplete, in some cases) payment card data. Again, Dixons said there was no evidence that it had resulted in any fraud.

'The protection of our data has to be at the heart of our business, and we've fallen short here.

In 2016 the ICO fined broadband provider TalkTalk 400,000 pounds for security failings that allowed hackers to launch a cyber-attack in 2015.

"Dixons was lucky to have had the breach before the GDPR regulation became effective, and the impact of the breach on their business was limited to 5.5% fall in the share price".

"The fact this only came to light now thanks to a review of the company's systems and data and actually occurred in 2017 is also cause for some concern", he said.
