George R R Martin wants to call the series The Long Night

Announced by the premium cable network as a new series based on a story written by Goldman and Martin himself, the "A Song of Ice and Fire" author has now taken to his endearingly antiquated blog on LiveJournal to explain that it is really Goldman's series... and may not be the only Game of Thrones prequel to be airing on HBO in the coming years. "But that does not mean the others are dead". Everything I am told indicates that we could film at least one more pilot, and maybe more than one, in the years to come. HBO has already confirmed that there will be as many as five prequels to the show, that will cover different periods of Westeros. "None of the characters or actors from Game of Thrones will appear in the new show".

'My vote would be The Long Night, which says it all, but I'd be surprised if that's where we end up. He also indicated that only one of the potential prequel series has been shelved and that the other three prequel scripts may eventually be filmed as well.

The epic franchise, which is set to spawn several more shows once the HBO epic reaches its finale next year, with HBO securing a pilot from Jane Goldman which is a prequel.

Martin went on to also extol much of the success in getting Goldman's treatment first before cameras goes to Goldman herself. All of the successor shows we've been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before. This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before Game of Thrones (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long).

George RR Martin is actively involved in Game of Thrones prequels. We're very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don't have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase "game of thrones" in there somewhere, ' he said. But this is television, so nothing is certain, ' he said. "She has been an absolute thrill to work with... and my god, what a talent", wrote Martin.

He has also reassured fans that he is still busy finishing writing the last "Game of Thrones" book saying: "And yes, before you ask, work on "Winds of Winter" continues, and remains my top priority". It's possible that the pilot episode for this untitled series won't even start filming until sometime next year, although there hasn't been a confirmed production schedule in place yet.
