Mum's parasite warning after daughter was left unable to walk

In a post on Facebook, Griffen, of Grenada, Mississippi, said her daughter "couldn't walk".

After waking her daughter to get ready for daycare, Jessica Griffin noticed that Kailyn struggled to stand on her own and was slurring her speech, according to news reports.

It was unclear where or when she thought her daughter had acquired the tick, or how long it had been on her body.

Griffin said she immediately took Kailyn to an emergency room, where doctors ran blood tests and performed a CT scan to confirm the diagnosis of tick paralysis. She included two photos in her post, which were the tick in Kailyn's head and the removed tick in a plastic bag.

If someone who has been outdoors in the spring or summer months suddenly becomes weak and appears to be getting worse, tick paralysis could be the cause.

Tick paralysis is caused by a toxin found in tick saliva, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Women and children are most at risk. Scary is a UNDERSTATEMENT! Griffin pleaded to parents to check their kids more often for ticks.

In Canada, tick species that can cause paralysis are found mostly in Southern British Columbia and Manitoba, but other species, like known Lyme-disease carriers blacklegged ticks, are aggressively expanding into new territory, even urban areas. This was brought on through a tick bite.

Symptoms usually begin with numbness or tingling, fatigue or weakness.

The American Lyme Disease Foundation states that it takes five to seven days for a person to develop tick paralysis symptoms.

The main treatment for tick paralysis is completely removing the tick, including all of its mouthparts, since they contain the salivary glands that produce the toxin.

"I went to brush her hair to put it in a ponytail and noticed she could barely talk and when I pulled her hair back that's when I seen the tick", she added. "We are being admitted to the hospital for observation and we're hoping her balance gets straightened out!" she wrote.

She posted images to Facebook last week, showing Kailyn in her hospital bed with a splint and an IV connected to her arm. Symptoms usually improve with 24 hours, according to the CDC, after the tick has been completely removed. Later that evening, Kailin was able to walk out of the hospital.
