Unprecedented meeting seen as a path to world peace

Without any prior warning, Trump announced he will be suspending the annual U.S. But because anti-Trumpers induced many to believe war was imminent, many now believe they are much safer thanks to the summit.

Trump also is wrong in saying "nothing happened" in return.

A television screen at the Baro bar broadcasts the Singapore summit meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as customers sit at the bar in the Korea Town section of Manhattan, New York, U.S., June 11, 2018.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterized by bloodshed and threats. More controversial are the annual spring drills - such drills were cancelled in the mid-1990's when other agreements were made with North Korea.

In August 2017, Pyongyang threatened missile strikes on Guam, the only USA territory easily in reach of North Korean missiles.

Annual military drills between the USA and South Korea have been a major source of tension on the Korean Peninsula.

Experts have argued that the Trump-Kim statement fell short of achieving meaningful action towards denuclearization.

"Trump expressed his intention to halt the USA -south Korea joint military exercises, which the DPRK side regards as provocation, over a period of good-will dialogue between the DPRK and the US, offer security guarantees to the DPRK and lift sanctions against it along with advance in improving the mutual relationship through dialogue and negotiation", the KCNA reported. Mr. Trump finally acknowledged.

Global markets were relatively subdued in their response to the historic negotiations between US President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week. Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond", and seemed to delight in giving Kim a glimpse of the presidential limousine.

And, hours earlier, Jimmy Kimmel reminded us our "The Art Of The Deal" president says he got Kim to promise to destroy a major missile testing site but it was not in the paperwork they signed "because we did not have time".

Almost an hour later, noted the "fortune" the US will save as a result of his commitment to end U.S.

There are usually two sets of exercises every year, in spring and autumn, involving a massive number of troops and military hardware. It said that he had also agreed to "step by step" denuclearization, rather than the rapid and irreversible process the administration said it was demanding. Defence Secretary James Mattis' chief spokeswoman, Dana W. White, told reporters he was "in full alignment" with Trump.

KCNA also mentioned the end of U.S. -South Korean military exercises, framing it as Trump agreeing to a request from Kim.

The upcoming joint exercise in August is more computer-based training.

Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end.

Even as they offered measured praise for Mr Trump's diplomatic efforts, congressional Republicans have emphasised the hard road that remains and pressed for more details of what exactly the President agreed to with Kim. That deal reportedly includes a commitment to a "complete denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula aimed at establishing a "peace regime". "I'm a realist. I'm not trying to bring democracy to North Korea".
