According to TSN's Josh Lewenberg, Nurse was on a list of internal candidates being considered that included Raptors 905 head coach Jerry Stackhouse (who joined the Memphis Grizzlies staff last week) and assistant Rex Kalamian. He was a student assistant at UNI for one year, was head coach at Grand View, then coached for 12 seasons in the British Basketball League. Nurse would probably have to be considered the front-runner of the group, given his track record and how the offense shifted and held up in the playoffs, but it's always hard to ascribe credit and blame across a coaching staff.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Raptors are hiring assistant coach Nick Nurse to replace Dwane Casey, who was sacked just over a month ago.

Mike Budenholzer, former Atlanta Hawks head coach and Spurs assistant, was also seen as a front-runner before being hired by Milwaukee.

The 50-year-old Nurse is known for his offensive skills as a coach, winning the D-League championship in 2010-11 and 2012-13 before joining the Raptors. Toronto also took the third-most threes in the league, up from 22nd place two seasons ago.

Casey was sacked last month and was hired by the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

Nick Nurse, head coach of the Iowa Energy, thanks the fans following the team's game against the Tulsa 66ers at the Wells Fargo Arena on April 18, 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa.
