Scots hope England ODI win boosts Test bid

Scotland enjoyed the greatest victory in their cricket history by holding their nerve to beat world number one-ranked England by six runs in a thrilling one-day global at Edinburgh on Sunday.

Ashton Agar believes Australia can exploit the uncertainty created by England's shock six-run defeat to Scotland in the forthcoming ODI series.

Self-confessed cricket nuffie Tim Paine says he's relishing the opportunity to mentor a rookie bowling attack ahead of his first game as permanent Australia captain against England on Wednesday.

"The level of expectation has been high around the team for a while, it doesn't get higher than being number one in the world", Morgan said.

Derbyshire have undergone something of a Tartan invasion in fact, with Safyaan Sharif, the fast bowler whose dismissal of Mark Wood sealed the six-run win at the Grange, already on the payroll, having signed earlier this year.

The disappointment is still very much there among the Scottish players, but MacLeod said the win over England will help put the team on the path to rebuilding.

Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed scores 89 off 49 deliveries against Scotland. Scotland, batting first, scored as many as 371 runs and set the record for the highest total by an Associate Nation in ODIs.

England captain Eoin Morgan put on a fearless face saying the shock reversal will act as ideal preparation for the series.

"A one-off game like this, to bring your best game is very hard to do, they played well and deserved the result", said Morgan. "I think it's going to be a good series".

Scotland's victory will send out a powerful message to the ICC, which voted to restrict the 2019 World Cup to 10 teams from the previous 14, which makes it far more hard for second-tier sides to qualify.

First Scotland impressed the cricketing world with their performance in Zimbabwe at the qualifiers, where they missed out of a successful result after a controversial Duckworth-Lewis loss to the West Indies in March, and on Sunday, once again they proved they have the potential to produce competitive cricket.

"We didn't do enough to win, if we had won it would have been a bonus from where we were", added the former Ireland batsman.
