Valve has released the public beta of Steam Chat, a new client that allows users to chat on the Steam platform easily. The gaming company just announced Steam Chat, which is now in beta for anyone to try.

The new Steam Chat's first improvement comes in the form of an upgraded friends list.

A preview of the Steam Chat platform.

The new friends list enables favorite friends, groups, and chats to be maintained at the top of the list, where they're easily accessible, and they can also be grouped by game or by party, making it easier to keep track of who's playing what, and who's playing together.

The new Steam Chat offers some great features that come as standard with other services. Voice chat has also been rebuilt from the ground up, with Valve saying it now sounds a lot cleaner than it did before. Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: these new group chats are very similar to Discord's servers.

The new features are only available for those in the beta. It is now easy to really create a community using the service, you can send game invites from within groups, and create separate channels within those groups too. Steam chat supports video embeds, e.g. from YouTube, pictures, tweets, and other media content inline now.You can paste images into the chat simply by copying them to the Clipboard and pasting them.

The new Steam Chat is available now via the Steam client and web browsers. We don't know what the company plans to update, but if the overhauls are as extensive as those made to Steam Chat, the platform-slash-marketplace could soon be pretty different from what we've grown accustomed to.
