Steven Gerrard factor key to Rangers landing £2m Nikola Katic

The Croatian defender agreed to a four-year deal with the Ibrox side and was officially unveiled on the Rangers Twitter account earlier this afternoon. "It's wonderful and a really good step for me". It's good to be here, it's a big step for me.

'There are a lot of long balls and duels, that's what I like'.

"I've seen the stadium on television and I have read about the fans and the rivalry with Celtic".

Katic becomes the fourth Croatian to play for Rangers, following in the footsteps of Dado Prso, Nikica Jelavic and Niko Kranjcar, and is keen to build on his fledgling worldwide career.

"Rangers needs to be in with the top European clubs, and I will try with the other players to move this club to the top of European football". It is really great and I can not wait to play here.

"Everyone has said they [the former players] did a good job here, and now I have a job to hold that tradition here".

Despite the interest from Spartak Moscow, Slaven Belupo sporting director Zvonimir Simunovic says the Croatian minnows wanted to do the deal with Rangers.

Connor Goldson, the 25-year-old Brighton player who is expected to form a new central defensive partnership with Katic, should conclude his move to Rangers for a fee of around £3m within the next 24 hours.

Since taking over from Graeme Murty, Gerrard has already organised deals for Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor, Jamie Murphy and Ovie Ejaria for his debut season in senior management.
