Trump declares North Korea 'no longer a nuclear threat'

Kim-Trump summit: Where does it leave the main players?

North Korean state media lauded the summit as a resounding success, highlighting concessions made by the U.S. president.

The US has continually rejected the Chinese proposal, with Trump saying in November that the plan had "consistently failed in the past", and his administration's continuously emphasizing their policy of "maximum pressure" to convince North Korea to denuclearize and negotiate with the US.

The argument also allows Trump's political allies and supporters in conservative media to claim ahead of the midterm elections that the President has engineered a triumph overseas that was beyond all his predecessors and has made America and the world much safer. Below is an abridged transcript.

Critics of Tuesday's bilateral meeting in Singapore and the joint statement that followed cite the fact that North Korea has flouted past joint declarations, and that the word of the dictatorial leader can not be trusted.

Trump said top officials including hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton would next week be "going over the details to get this stuff done".

Trump's Tuesday pledge appeared to reverse that position.

However, at the same time, the executive office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in told their state media outlet Yonhap News that the suspension of joint military drills may be a necessary step in urging North Korea to enter denuclearization talks.

What are the chances that the Koreas will actually be united as one nation? Already, North Korea has criticized the USA and South Korea's military drills, saying they're not helpful for peace talks.

Mr Trump also unexpectedly announced United States would not hold war games with South Korea while North Korea negotiated in good faith on denuclearisation.

"His country has to be de-nuked, and he understood that, he fully understood that", Trump said. He also predicted that the Kim Jong and he "will solve a big problem, a big dilemma". We know that Kim is far less cautious about his public appearances than many had surmised. He didn't look exactly comfortable strolling around Singapore's tourist spots, surrounded by a phalanx of guards, but he spent more than two hours out on the town, and was happy to have those images published back in Pyongyang. It called the summit "dumbfounding and nonsensical", and said it will allow North Korea to permanently maintain its nuclear weapons program.

"We will make sure that every dollar is spent appropriately", he said. It has not given the U.S. any information about them. I really believe that.

South Korea will be looking for clarity from Mike Pompeo on key security issues raised by the Trump-Kim summit, when the U.S. secretary of state visits Seoul on Wednesday.

A report from the Korean Central News Agency said Trump agreed to "lift sanctions...along with advance in improving the mutual relationship through dialogue and negotiation".

Even if there's no record, Trump assured reporters that it's no big deal.

Asked whether he thinks the North Korean dictator is willing to change, Trump told ABC News, "Over my lifetime, I've done a lot of deals with a lot of people, and sometimes the people that you most distrust turn out to be the most honorable ones, and the people that you do trust, they are not the honorable ones".
