Former Vice President Joe Biden has issued a statement blasting President Donald Trump's Singapore summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, charging he gave Kim "many sought-after wins up front without getting anything in return". "My meeting with Chairman Kim was honest, direct, and productive".

Kim emerged from the summit having scored several victories.

"Not necessarily because of the President's mentioning of him but because of what we went through".

Meeting with staged ceremony on a Singapore island, Trump and Kim signed a joint statement Tuesday agreeing to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, although the timeline and tactics were left unclear.

Other commitments also didn't make it into the text, he said, including his own plan to halt "war games" with South Korea. With the joint statement under his belt, Kim can now count on China and Russian Federation to argue on his behalf to start easing the economic sanctions that have been placed on his country.

The US president had an unusually light public schedule the day before the summit and holed up in his hotel the whole afternoon and evening - although he was tweeting very early on D-day and again on his way to the meeting. The talks ultimately imploded over differences on a verification regime, and North Korea formally withdrew from the negotiations after it launched a long-range rocket, prompting global outrage.

Trump's scorecard is far more mixed. Trump warmly touched Kim's arm during the handshake. They sat across the table from Kim and his team. Pompeo held firm to Trump's position that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes - and said they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively.

The photo of a grinning North Korean leader, taken and posted online by Singapore's foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan, astonished social media users. That could constrain the U.S.'s ability deploy its nuclear-capable military assets such as bombers in the region.

They agreed to establish new relations between the countries and committed to "build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean peninsula", where the United States and South Korea are still technically at war with the North. Mr Trump said he wanted to see United States troops withdraw from the South.

The US would suspend "provocative" war games it holds with South Korea. "Our forces in South Korea are stabilizing for Asia".

If implemented, the halting of the joint military exercises would be one of the most controversial moves to come from the summit.

But the routine joint military exercises are critical to maintaining the ability of the American and South Korean militaries to operate together in case of a contingency.

North Korea sees the annual exercises as a rehearsal for invasion, but the government in Seoul maintains they are defensive in nature.

The Massachusetts Democrat, who has been one of the most outspoken critics of the Trump administration, said that "success will be judged on whether it can eliminate Kim's nuclear weapons and verify they are gone". "The Korean War never ended, it was a cease-fire and now we have a chance to put that conflict to bed".
