Telltale nabs yet another big license, is working on a Stranger Things game

"We're delighted by the response we're seeing to the idea of Minecraft: Story Mode coming to Netflix in the fall as an interactive adventure, and separately, we're thrilled to confirm that Telltale is developing a game based on Stranger Things that we'll publish to consoles and computers at a later date".

This sounds like a window is opening for Netflix to slowly take over the game streaming business, but I wouldn't go that far just yet. The service merely requires players to use their remote as a game controller, leading to the initial speculation that additional hardware won't be necessary to play the select series coming to Netflix.

Developer Telltale Games confirmed during E3 2018 that the studio is now at work on a few projects in conjunction with Netflix, with the first being a new episodic game series based around Stranger Things, the network's acclaimed sci-fi drama series that first debuted in 2016, and most recently released its second season last fall. Sources told TechRadar that Minecraft: Story Mode will appear in a five-part episodic form and Netflix confirmed to them that the game will appear "in an adapted form".

Telltale has previously worked with Amazon to bring several of their series - including The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and The Wolf Among Us - to steaming services. Lastly, Netflix said it has no plans to get into gaming.

Update, 3:45PM ET: Telltale has confirmed its new partnership with Netflix as well as a forthcoming Stranger Things game for consoles and PCs. Depending on how much is cut out from the experience it might not end up looking different than some of the choose-your-own-experience titles Netflix already has on its service. Reports suggest a partnership between Telltale and Netflix could be announced "any day". But if you were hoping this represented a first step toward the streaming of modern "AAA" games, the blockbusters like Assassin's Creed or Destiny, keep waiting.

We've reached out to Netflix and Telltale. "It's an extension of our other interactive stories".

Back in December we reported on the possibility of Netflix offering branching path content, and had even pointed to Telltale's The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones as flawless examples of limited interaction experiences that could fit with Netflix's technology.

There are no specific details for the Stranger Things game yet.
