If the PGA Tour would come to Minnesota, the course would stop hosting the Champions tour but 3M would continue to sponsor it, according to sources. The prize money will be $7.5 million. The Houston Golf Association had run the tournament since 1946. The tournament will move to the fall portion of the season, with its next iteration coming in the fall of 2019 during the 2019-20 PGA Tour campaign.

Earlier in June, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS reported that golf officials from the Twin Cities were down in Florida at the PGA headquarters trying to secure a spot on next year's golf tour.

The Astros Foundation will use a consortium of local sponsors for financial support of the tournament.

The PGA Tour has yet to release next year's full schedule. That part of the schedule includes where to put Detroit, Minnesota and the Canadian Open.

It was just two months ago that the Golf Club of Houston declined to host the event going forward.

Crane's efforts will keep Houston from losing its PGA event. The Astros Foundation is the team charity of the Houston Astros.

Crane said money raised from the Houston Open will allow the Astros Foundation to extend its commitment to the city and country and to help improve Houston's parks. It became the last chance to get into the Masters, and it attracted players such as Phil Mickelson who prefer to play the week before a major. His title defense would not be until 2019, possibly in October.

The links course now plays host to the 3M Championships - part of the PGA Champions (Senior) Tour - in late July and early August which has been in Minnesota since the early 1990s. Champions hosted the U.S. Open that year.
