Among the first memorials was a vigil at a church near to the block, where the names of the 72 victims were read out at 1.30am - near to the time of the fire's breaking out.

The fire was brought under control within an hour of the alarm being raised and there were no reports of any injuries.

Most of the balcony and part of a four-bedroom flat in the block on Elmira Street were damaged.

The London Fire Brigade said a sprinkler system was activated and suppressed the fire, as 16 999 calls were made about the blaze.

Residents were forced to leave the building at around 4:30am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

They said: "Fire in our block of flats this morning - emergency evacuation alarms "failed", evacuated by friendly neighbours, all safe and well".

Yusif Ali tweeted: 'Fire in Roma Corte building, Lewisham and no fire alarm was set off.

Crews from Deptford, New Cross and Lewisham were among the 58 firefighters at the scene, while police and ambulance staff were also present. Instead get woken up to the sound of people screaming there was a fire.

Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze in a 20-storey apartment block in Lewisham in south London early on Thursday.
