Rashford A Concern For England

Gareth Southgate new England manager

The former Crystal Palace and Everton boss feels he should still be in charge of England and, in a BBC documentary to be aired on Sunday, said: "Jealous is what I feel".

A key member of Manchester City's title-winning team last season, Walker has been deployed as a right-sided centre-back in a back-three by manager Gareth Southgate and is likely to retain the spot against Tunisia in their Group G opener on Monday.

"I've talked before about there being a disconnect between the supporters and the team", Southgate said. "We want to make sure we are here as winners".

Walker had hoped to prove himself as the world's best right-back in Russian Federation, but added that he is happy to help England in any way he can. For instance, at a recently media day, all 23 players in the World Cup squad were available for journalists to speak to freely.

"He has taught me so much about the game: just managing the game, understanding the game, and knowing the players around you really".

England have won only six matches in the knockout stages of major global tournaments since their World Cup triumph in 1966, the last victory of that kind being 12 years ago against Ecuador. Constantly trying to improve, playing in a style that we've used in the past year or so and that people have warmed to.

"But our focus as a team has to be on the bits we can control".

"I like the fact he is a home-grown Manchester United player: we need these characters".

"If we do all of those things, play with a smile on our faces and enjoy our football, I think we will get results".
