McIlroy meltdown after an 80 at Shinnecock Hills

He mixed five front-nine bogeys with three on the back, as well as a double- bogey and a birdie.

"The wind was strong, the ball is getting blown around so much and with the locations of the pins you can't get it close and on top of that it's hard to putt", he said.

Fox Sports Golf host Holly Sonders and golf course design analyst Gil Hanse on the 2018 U.S. Open and the difficulty of the Shinnecock Hills course.

McIlroy equalled the worst round of his major career as he slumped to a 10-over-par 80, while Woods only fared slightly better as he triple-bogeyed his opening hole on his way to an opening-round 78.

The 23-year old Englishman finished the windy day with a 22-over 92, becoming the first player to shoot 90 or above at the US Open since Felix Casas did it 16 years ago in his second round at Bethpage Black. He won the British Amateur Championship the year before.

After missing from seven feet for birdie on the 10th, his opening hole, McIlroy dropped shots on the next two holes and then ran up back-to-back double bogeys on the 13th and 14th.

"It's been a long time and this is not really the week I wanted to revisit that score".
